Are You Tough Enough?
I used to run half marathons, but started to realize I didn’t enjoy “just” running as much as other people do. Lo and behold the advent of the obstacle course! From shorter races such as The Color Run and The Warrior Dash, to longer ones like the Tough Mudder and The Spartan Race Beast, there are now literally dozens of options for people of all ages and abilities.
Having now done the Rugged Maniac (5k) and the Tough Mudder (10-12 miles) I can tell you that these races are just as much mental as physical. Having teammates to help push you is just as important as the physical training you do as preparation. Obstacles in the Tough Mudder such as Artic Enema (large pool of water filled with ice cubes) are easier to handle when you have friends to do it with you.
Due to the distances, running is of course one of the parts of training. But because many obstacles require upper and lower body strength there is a fair amount of strength training that needs to be accomplished if you want to avoid skipping obstacles and avoid injury.
From the races I’ve done one of the things I’ve really loved is the camaraderie amongst all the contestants. Finishing time is really not important here, and it’s great to see total strangers helping pull each other up over obstacles.
