Pre-Op PT Reduces Total Cost Of Care Of Total Knee Replacement
I have recently seen an increase in total knee replacement patients within the past month. Many of the difficulties with the increasing knee replacements are how quickly they are now discharged from hospital facilities, often within 3 days. In my experiences patients are getting to outpatient therapy with increased stiffness and little awareness to the importance of working on achieving the early return of motion and with the knowledge regarding activity management.
A new medical study has suggested a cost effective way to better manage care for this trending issue. A simple pre-operative visit to educate the patient on importance of staying compliant with exercises, expectations and best ways of managing pain, swelling, mobility and not to be forgotten – rest. This new study suggests 1-2 visits pre-operatively can reduce cost by an adjusted cost reduction of $1,215 per patient in total rehab care cost.
These same patients who used pre-operative visits also were found to reduce postoperative outpatient visits by 29%. If you would like to see more on this study I have listed a link below. Let OSI get you back to the things you love. Be your own advocate; be an informed patient.
