It must be true. I saw it on the Internet. You may have seen the commercial released by State Farm poking fun at this statement. If you haven’t, here it is.
However, it can’t be far off when a video with no immediate credibility for treating sciatic pain is viewed 4.5 million times. You’d think these have to be the best exercises.
I Saw It On The Internet, It Must Be True: Exercises To Ease The Sciatic Nerve Pain
CAUTION. Sciatica is a general medical term referring to any pain that follows the path of the sciatic nerve. The sciatic nerve is a branch off your lower spine that travels down the back aspect of the leg. Sciatica related pain can be driven by, to name just a few, disk related injuries in the low back; scar tissue from a back or leg related surgery or injury; or narrowing of the spinal cannal/foramen where the spinal cord and nerves run.
Now some of the exercises in this very popular video on YouTube listing Exercises To Ease the Sciatic Nerve Pain are good and commonly given within therapy for specific conditions, however, again I would CAUTION.
Exercise #2 within the video where the character is lying on his back and repeatedly lifts both legs into the air has nothing to note the importance of back stabilization. Again this can be a great exercise if performed correctly and if you are strong enough to start with that level of intensity. However, if performed incorrectly, symptoms likely will worsen. Sciatica can be a disabling diagnosis, but can often be managed well with appropriate exercise regimen.
Conclusion: Before you reach out to the Internet for advice remember that your Physical Therapist (musculoskeletal specialist) would be happy to answer your questions, and your friends at OSI are just a phone call away.
