Want to test your cold weather limits and winter running skills? There are some really fun events that are happening in and around Duluth this winter. Whether you’re an avid runner, have a new year’s resolution to be more active, or want to help a good cause in 2017, here are some great opportunities to participate in some fun local events.
Barely Organized New Year’s Day Run
When: January 1, 2017
Where: Duluth, MN
Want to start 2017 on the right step? Participants of this event can run, bike, walk, bike or even snowshoe through the trails of Hartley Park. There’s even a festive pot-luck after the finish!

Polar Plunge
When: February 17, 2017
Where: Duluth, MN
This is definitely an event for the daring! Participants could out by the thousands for the Polar Plunge, which involves braving the cold and jumping into freezing cold Minnesota lake waters. You’re probably wondering why anyone would do such a crazy thing. Well, the Polar Plunges supports the Special Olympics Minnesota and is a great way to test your limits and get involved. For anyone who just wants to run and support the cause, there’s a 5k event or if you want to add it, you can sign up for the “Splash and Dash” which incorporates the big plunge!
Participants should be prepared to raise a minimum of $75 to go towards the Special Olympics Minnesota. 100% of the proceeds benefit events and programs for over 8,000 athletes in Minnesota.

Net proceeds from this event go towards the Young Athletes Foundation (YAF) which aims to develop and promote active and healthy lifestyles of Minnesota’s youth, specifically in Carlton County, Cook County, Douglas County, Lake County and St. Louis County.
