Small Town Girl At Heart
I am from a small town in north central MN. This is not just a small town that no one knows about that you drive through and you don’t even know you drove through it. My town is a tourist town. I grew up with “city people” coming up and taking over my little town every summer. I embraced it. My friends and I became friends with people from the cities and didn’t mind them coming into our town.
I grew up working every summer in restaurants and golf courses. I appreciate the experience I have in customer service. I truly think it is something everyone should do at some point in their lives. It gives you a whole new perspective and respect for anyone who is on the other side of the counter when you go out shopping, out to eat, out with friends, etc. I now believe it makes me better at my job as an Athletic Trainer.
I am always working with people and I think I am good at it. I like being around people. I can thank my experience from my little town for making me better at my job today. It is weird to think that I could actually be considered one of those “city people” now. But I would never say I am. When I say I am going up north for a weekend, everyone asks “where’s your cabin?” I smile and say “it’s not my cabin, it’s my home.” I am going to stay with my parents in the house that I grew up in.
I’ve been asked if I like living in a small town or a city better. It’s hard for me to say which I like better. My roots are small town and will never change. I love the slower pace and the peace and quiet. But on the other hand, I like the pace of being in a city and there are many things to do at your fingertips. I think I am blessed to have the experience of both. It makes me appreciate both equally. There is one thing that rings true to me though… you can take the girl out of the small town, but you can’t take the small town out of the girl. It is close to my heart and will always be.
My friends and I, no matter where we are in the world, whenever we really talk about where we grew up, we refer to it as God’s Country. Where is this “God’s Country???” It’s called Crosslake, MN. If you’ve never heard of it or have never been there, I’m sure you know someone who has. If you’ve heard of it or have been there, then you know what I’m talking about.
