Organic Produce: Is It The Right Choice For You?
As a Breast Cancer survivor, I am always seeking to make healthy choices. But buying all organic is hard on the grocery budget! The Environmental Protection Agency reports that the majority of pesticides now in use are possible causes of Cancer. Studies of Farmworkers who are exposed to pesticides suggest a link between Pesticide exposure and Cancer. What we don’t know for sure, is what level of exposure is needed to be a Cancer risk. Because of these factors, I use the following lists, provided by the Environmental working group, as my guideline. They are called the “Dirty Dozen and The “Clean Fifteen”
Other strategies include; washing your produce with soap and water or a vegetable wash, peeling produce or discarding the outer leaves of lettuce or cabbage where there is the highest concentration of Pesticides. Keep in mind that studies show that their are significant health benefits to eating a diet rich in fruits and vegetables, whether Organic or not.
Bottom line, Supporting Organic Farming is good for our environment, Farm Workers and our health. Thanks for reading and stay healthy!
