10 Questions Parents Should Ask Their Child’s Athletic Trainer

Posted by

As parents, you may see the same athletic trainer on the field for many of your child’s games.  But do you know who they are or why they are there?  I have compiled a list of good questions a parent should ask their child’s Athletic Trainer.

10 Questions Parents Should Ask Their Child’s Athletic Trainer

  1. What is your background, training, certifications?
  2. Do you know CPR, basic first aid, and how to use an AED?
  3. Who do you refer my child to if they get injured?  Can I decide who they see?
  4. What are some ways we can prevent my child from getting injured?
  5. Who is part of the Sports Medical Team which is referred to on my emergency card I sign at the beginning of each sport season?
  6. Who makes the return to play decision if my child is injured?
  7. Who is the team physician and what are their qualifications?
  8. Are you at all practices and games?
  9. What happens if the Athletic Trainer is not onsite and there is an injury?
  10. What is the protocol if my child has a concussion?

It is important to me as an athletic trainer to not only get to know the athlete, but also get to know their parents, so please if you have any questions, feel free to ask!
