Have You Visited Your Local Farmers Market Yet This Season?

Although some of the veggies that we love have not yet been harvested, there’s an array of early veggies, fruit, jams, organic meats and cheeses, artisan breads, flowers, corn, beans, pea pods, onions, greens and so much more already being offered at our local markets!

Is it worth it to pay a little more for organic?

Well, that’s totally up to you but according to “The Environmental Working Groups Shopper’s Guide to Pesticides“, The most contaminated fruits and vegetables make up their “dirty dozen” list below:

  • Apples

  • Strawberries

  • Grapes

  • Celery

  • Peaches

  • Spinach

  • Sweet Bell peppers

  • Nectarines

  • Cucumbers

  • Potatoes

  • Cherry Tomatoes

  • Hot Peppers

Most Produce sellers will promote that they are organic. If not, just ask!

Fruits and vegetables are colorful for a good reason!  Nature made them to be pleasing to the eye as well as good for you in many ways.  For example; Watermelons, tomatoes, guava and pick grapefruit are high in Lycopene, an antioxidant in red and pink produce, which can lower your risk of heart disease. Blueberries are blue because of Anthocyanins, which may help to keep your mind sharp.

For me, there’s nothing better than getting to the Farmers Market early on a Saturday morning, finding a place to sit for people watching while enjoying my fresh homemade pastry and hot cup of organic coffee!
