What Causes Elbow Pain?

Most elbow pain is caused by overuse of the “extensor” or “flexor” muscles in your arm and forearm, particularly where the tendons attach to rounded projections of bone (epicondyles) at the elbow. The muscles you use to grip, twist, and carry objects with your hand all attach to the “lateral epicondyle” or “medial epicondyle at the elbow. That’s why a movement of the wrist or hand can actually cause pain in the elbow and you could possibly have “Tennis Elbow” or “Golfer’s Elbow”.

Prolonged use of the wrist and hand, such as when using a computer or operating machinery or playing tennis with an improper grip or technique can lead to elbow pain. It can happen to athletes, non-athletes, children, and adults. It occurs more often in men than women, and most commonly affects people between the ages of 30 and 50.

Our therapists at OSI will treat your pain through a hands-on approach following a customized treatment plan that’s best for you. Once we’ve assessed the extent of your elbow pain or injury, we will work with you to put together a treatment plan to help you return to your normal routine. Physical therapy utilizes a variety of evidence-based treatments, physical exercises and hands-on modalities to provide rehabilitation at the onset of injury or pain.
