Staying Happy and Healthy Through the Holidays

The bustling malls. The present wrapping. The festive parties. The family visits. This time of year is meant to be a time of reflection and enjoyment. But for many, they become a blur of stress and diet-breaking events. So we put together these tips to help you avoid being a Grinch, and instead stay healthy, happy and refreshed through the holidays!

Healthy Eating

Don’t skip meals

The best thing you can do to start your day is having breakfast. Whether you’re heading out to get shopping done or have a long day of party hopping, eating breakfast will give you long lasting energy so you don’t crash mid-day. Eating consistently throughout the day will also help you from going overboard on the appetizer spread! Now if you do overeat at a party, don’t give yourself a guilt trip. Just eat lighter at your next meal, it’s not worth beating yourself up about overdoing it a little bit.

Browse before plating

One way to prevent going overboard is to browse the entire buffet/spread before you start filling up your plate with food. This way you can plan what you want to have instead of getting everything there is!

Monitor your beverages

It’s okay to enjoy a couple drinks through the holidays, but drinking can quickly increase your caloric intake. Be cognizant of how much you’re drinking, and what you are drinking. There are healthier options than Uncle Joe’s famous spiked egg nog.

Stress Relief

Get vitamin D

Some areas of the country get very gray and gloomy during winter. The lack of sunlight can directly impact people’s moods. Sunlight provides beneficial vitamin D which can boost your mood and even help you sleep better at night. Check out these additional ways that sunlight can help boost your mood, and safe ways to get doses of it.

Don’t go overboard

It’s easy to go overboard during the holidays. One of the biggest gifts you can give yourself is learning how to say “No”. This is one of the easiest ways to simplify your holiday season. While it may be hard at first, and many of you reading this right now probably feel guilty when you decline. However, those who pick and choose a couple events get to spend more time with their own family, and less time rushing around trying to please everyone.

Disconnect from technology

The combination of checking text messages, emails, and social media is a surefire way to increase your stress levels over the holidays. Do not worry about keeping up with the Joneses, do not worry about work emails. Take this time to go tech-free, and instead plug in to being present with those around you.

Exercise

The thing about the holidays is that we get so over programmed, it is hard to stick with our exercise routine. If you take our advice of learning to say no, you should still have some free time left for yourself. If you still have a hard time getting to the gym or workout class, try to incorporate at least 30 minutes of walking into your daily routine. Lack of exercise can affect your mood and stress levels, so making it a priority will only benefit you through the holidays.

 

If all else fails, just remember to take some time to truly relax. Breath in the crisp wintry air, hug those you love and enjoy it all one day at a time. After all, it IS the most wonderful time of the year.
