Fishing Opener 2014
It’s 4:15 am, my alarm is going off. Worse yet, it’s Saturday. But not just any Saturday. Nay, it’s May 10th, 2014. Fishing opener! Normally I wouldn’t be so excited, I’m an ice fisherman. I value a heated shack, comfortable chair, food and beverage, and my Vexilar fish flasher. Summer fishing is not my forte. Heck, I don’t even own a summer fishing pole! (But my birthday is coming up so that might change!) I showed up to my buddy’s parent’s house (or better known as base camp), with my duffel bag and some rain gear. I was ready.
We watched the Wild defeat the Blackhawks Friday night, and decided 4:15 was a good time to wake up the next morning. Really?? But it was. As we got to the “hot spot”, we were not the first, not the second, but the third boat to the spot! And it was only 5:05am. One of the other boats had been out since 2am. Nutty, I know. Either way, we caught some walleye and northern pike, and headed home for brunch at about 10. After a nap, we headed back out for an evening fish. Two more days just like that one resulted in a nice trip, with plenty of fish for each of us to take home.
I can tell you one thing: I live to ice fish, but this was a pretty good time, and I might even go back next year!
