It has been a while since I have written about the benefits of exercise for pre-diabetes and diabetes.  I feel that, even though I have written about this topic before, it is well worth discussing again.

Pre-diabetes is a condition where a person’s blood glucose is elevated and approaching the levels considered to be diabetic but aren’t quite there yet.  This is the time to make a change before the blood glucose levels actually reach diabetic stages.  Once this happens, a person is at risk for many other health problems that accompany diabetes.

The best approach to treating pre-diabetes is with an exercise program and a change in eating habits. Did you know that as little as a 5-10% reduction in body weight can have a significant impact on your blood glucose? Many patients that I see that come to me for OSI’s Pre-Diabetic Program come because they have been told by their doctor to exercise and lose weight but they don’t know where to start.  A physical therapist can help guide you and make sure you are doing the right exercises, which include both strength training and aerobic exercise.  We meet with you weekly to progress and diversify the exercises that you are doing and recheck your weight and body fat percent to make sure you are meeting your goals.

The American Diabetic Association recommends strengthening exercises be done 2-3 times per week and conditioning exercises 4-7 days per week for 20-30 minutes. Physical therapists are trained to determine the right exercises for you so you have a specific program to follow.

Another important aspect of OSI’s Pre-Diabetic Program is making good food choices and being educated in healthy foods to eat, portion sizes, and the proportion of food from different food groups.  This education is part of our program.
