OSI Maplewood Clinic Now Offers Aquatic Physical Therapy

A couple of months ago OSI Maplewood entered into a partnership with the Maplewood Community Center (MCC) to offer aquatic physical therapy (pool) services at their location.  It has turned out to be a great adjunct service offered by our location!

So how do you know if aquatic therapy is right for you?  Well, here are just some of the things that pool-based therapy can help with:

Buoyancy of water reduces compressive forces on joints, so for those patients with arthritic pain it can unload the joint and reduce pain

Water resistance to movement is greater than air, so strengthening of weak muscles can be achieved in a pool.  We even have equipment to increase surface area, thus increasing the resistance even further

Warm water increases blood flow, which can help relax pain associated with muscle tension.  This can be helpful to those who have spasms associated with low back pain

Safe balance training for those who are at risk of falling. The buoyancy of the water offers body support to safely work on balance activities

Because of the reduced effects of gravity, flexibility and range of motion increases can be achieved with less pain in a pool

There is not extra charge to the patient to use aquatic therapy with OSI beyond their normal insurance co-pays/deductibles.  An initial appointment is done on land with a physical therapist at our clinic prior to starting in the water.  If you’re considering pool therapy for your condition, please don’t hesitate to contact OSI at 651-275-4706 to see how we can help you!
