It’s that time of year! You’re about to get swaps with a large number of holiday party invites. There are always a plethora of cookies and — you guessed it – alcohol. It can be pretty easy to get carried away drinking when you’re in a celebratory mood. How can you maintain your healthy diet while still enjoying the holiday season? It’s totally possible.
Liquid calories are sneaky. Alcohol is specific can carry quite a large amount of calories. A single serving of alcohol can have as much as 100 to 150 calories, but that doesn’t even include those festive sugary drinks that usually pop up around this time of year. Eggnog and a candy cane martinis are just a few of the favorites.
This holiday season, how can you be smart about the drinks you have while still having fun? Here are some tips!
- Sip on some water between drinks. It keeps you well hydrated (and hopefully avoids a hangover), but it will also slow down how fast you’re consuming drinks. As your stomach gets fuller with water, you won’t need as many cocktails.
- Ask for lower calorie mixers. Tonic water or lemon and lime wedges have fewer calories than sprite. The bartender will have some experience with ingredient swaps without needing to sacrifice any of the flavor. Ask them for some help and they’ll know what to do.
- Enjoy in moderation. Sip slowly. The faster you drink, the more you. Be mindful that you are able to reduce your calorie intake, without feeling restricted.
- Eat something healthy. While you’re drinking, it’s common to get hungry and that’s a good thing. The food can help soak up some of the alcohol, but it doesn’t soak up the calories you consume. You still want to make smart decisions about what you’re putting into your body. Fruit and veggies with dip are a good option. Crackers and cheese can be delicious with a good cocktail.
You can still join in the fun while keeping your diet on track. Be smart and think about the drinks before you order and you’ll have much better luck sticking to the plan!
