6 Bad Habits That Affect Your Joints

It is extremely important to take care of your joints, especially as you grow older. Bad habits you develop over time can have a big impact on your overall health, including the joints in your body. If you’re experiencing issues with your joints, you may want to consider making some lifestyle changes to live a healthier lifestyle. So, what are some of the bad habits to drop? Here are 6 habits you should break for your joints’ sake!

1. Repetitive motions

Repetitive motions, like texting, dicing food, or typing can be very taxing on your joints. Take a break every few minutes and avoid the activity if your joints are already feeling bad.

2. Lack of movement

Staying in the same position for long periods of time can strain your joints and tire your muscles. The blood flow to your extremities can decrease when your not moving. To get the blood moving, stand while you’re working on your computer, stretch or shift positions at least every 15 minutes.

3. Toting heavy objects

Carrying too much weight in your purse or your backpack can cause some damage to the joints in your neck or shoulder joints. It can compress delicate nerves. Distribute the weight you’re carrying evenly. If it feels uncomfortable or causes pain, it’s too heavy to carry.

4. Not sleeping enough

Don’t underestimate the power of a good night’s rest. It can make a huge difference in how you feel. Cut out the caffeine at least 6 hours before bed, avoid alcohol and exercise regularly. Another tip is to check to see if your mattress is old, which can make it lose it’s hold and support. A medium-firm mattress model is the most effective at preventing pain in your back and joints.

5. Gaining extra weight

The more you weigh, the more pressure your joints are enduring. Your hips, knees, and spine bear the weight of your torso. Excess weight strains your joints and can cause pain throughout your body.

6. Smoking

Nicotine causes restriction in the small blood vessels that supply blood to your joints, especially in your spine. It puts your body at a much higher risk for spine and joint problems at a much younger age.
