5 Things You Need to Know About Starting Physical Therapy

Have you been told to start pt? Here are five tips on what you should know before starting physical therapy!

Tip #1: If you think you need physical therapy, don’t hesitate to reach out to the physical therapists directly. Minnesota is a state of direct access, meaning you do not need a doctor referral to see us for most healthcare plans (always check with insurance first)! Additionally, we do offer free phone consults if you are not sure where you should be going.

Tip #2: If you do get referred to physical therapy you have the right to choose where you go and who you see. It is your right as a patient to request where you go. If someone tells you you have to go to a specific clinic that is not true and they are misleading you.

Tip #3: Physical therapists work closely with MDs in your community and can often serve as good resources should you need an additional referral to a specialist (i.e. orthopedic surgeon). Physical therapists are highly trained to recognize “red flags” and other findings that may warrant further medical care that may have otherwise gotten missed.

Tip #4: Most conditions require both hands-on/manual work and exercise to get better, so be prepared to exercise! Wear your favorite workout gear to your first appointment!

Tip #5: Once you do get better, physical therapists do a great job to show you things you can do on your own to prevent your injury from coming back. Prevention is the best medicine!
