Athletes use stretching to stay on top of their game and prevent injuries, but it shouldn’t be reserved for just the professionals. Daily stretching can be helpful for everyone. Not only does it improve your flexibility over time, but it can help protect your mobility.

Stretching keeps your muscles healthy and strong so your joints can maintain their range of motion. When you don’t stretch, your muscles shorten and they can become tight and weak, making it difficult to use them when you really need it. Lack of stretching can lead to joint pain, strains, and even muscle damage.

Need a few more reasons to stretch more? Daily stretching has a number of benefits:

  • Preventing injuries
  • Improving physical performance
  • Improving posture
  • Reducing pain
  • Boosting blood flow and oxygen to muscles
  • Removes metabolic waste in the body

Where to focus

There are important muscles in your body that you definitely want to pay close attention too. Every muscle is critical, but you don’t have to stretch everything. You’ll want to stretch your lower extremities: calves, hamstrings, hip flexors, and thighs. It’s good practice to stretch out your shoulders, neck, and back too.

Starting your routine

How can you start incorporating stretching into your daily routine? We have a few ideas for you.

  1. Start off the morning with a good stretch. Your body could use it after a good night sleep. It can help get your blood moving in the morning and get your day off to a good start.
  2. Try yoga! Even a few minutes of yoga every day can greatly improve your flexibility. Focus in our your hamstrings, hip flexors, piriformis, gastroc (calf), pectoral (chest), and paraspinals (spine). Jump on YouTube for some beginner video for yoga and keep those muscles moving!
  3. Pick a few times throughout day to get up out of your chair to stretch a bit. Squeeze in some time after a few hours of sitting. You don’t want to be stationary for too long. Stretch your legs so that your hamstrings don’t become tight or weak. That can make it harder to extend your leg completely.
