My Newest Obsession: Paddle Boarding
I recently purchased a paddle board. I have been coveting these things for a couple of years. I always thought it looked so fun, a great way to get out on the water, a great way to be outside and be active. I rented one on Lake Harriet a couple of times and was hooked, so I finally took the plunge and bought one.
Over a recent weekend, the sun was out and the winds were calm, so out I went onto White Bear Lake for my inaugural paddle and it couldn’t have been more fun. I even had my husband take a spin on it and both of my girls went for rides with their mama. My 8 year old was even standing for part of her ride! I was surprised, though by some of the muscle groups that got more of a workout than I thought they would.
I knew my core needed to be involved to protect my spine and get good stability while paddling (great for those side core muscles FYI), but I was surprised that my hip muscles were sore the next day as were my ankle stabilizers (probably because I was a little wobbly to start and my toes were probably gripping the board for dear life at the beginning). Now that I feel like I’ve gotten a better feel for how to get up and down on the board, I am so excited to get out there again.
Did you know you can go to classes on area city lakes that are held on the boards or that you can do yoga on the board. The yoga thing is now a goal of mine, but I think I need a little more practice and maybe a secluded lake to people can’t laugh at me as I fall out of my downward dog. If this sounds even remotely fun, get out there and rent a board. It’s even more fun than it looks!
