When I am discharging a patient from physical therapy, I am frequently asked:

Hey Pete, so if I have another injury down the road, can I just call you or do I have to go through my doctor first?”

The answer is YES, YOU CAN JUST CALL US!

Direct access to physical therapy is legal in the state of Minnesota (and has been for many years). For you lawyers out there, here is a more official summary of the law: http://www.apta.org/uploadedFiles/APTAorg/Advocacy/State/Issues/Direct_Access/DirectAccessbyState.pdf

But why would you want to see us first?

Well:

  • We’re musculoskeletal experts. A study comparing musculoskeletal knowledge between PTs and doctors found that PTs knowledge is higher than all medical doctors with the exception of orthopedists. More than general practitioners, internal med doctors, interns, residents, etc. Since we are easily accessible experts, we are a good place to start if you have a musculoskeletal injury.
  • You save a co-pay (and time). Basically everyone has an in-office co-pay nowadays, ranging from $10-$40 or more, so why check in with your physician first if you are likely to be referred to us anyway? Just skip a step.
  • We will do a thorough medical screen. Sometimes people are worried that “something more” may be going on when they have an injury, and they want to make sure we don’t miss some sort of “red flag”. Well guess what: We are trained to perform medical screens during our Doctorate of Physical Therapy education, so if there is something more going on, we will find it and refer you to the appropriate medical professional.
  • Quick Access. Usually you can get into physical therapy within a week or so, whereas wait times for orthopedists can be much longer.

So in summary, PTs are the quickest, easiest access for expert advice of your musculoskeletal condition. Keep that in mind next time you roll your ankle, twist your knee, or injure your shoulder.

If you have any more questions about direct access, what PT services we offer, or just a nagging injury you want to talk about, feel free to contact me at plarson@osipt.com or setup a free phone consultation with me at 651-275-4706. Thanks!
