TMD physical therapy is appropriate for people with
painful conditions of the face, jaw, head and/or neck. OSI has a number physical
therapists who provide specialty care to patients with TMD conditions. Our
therapists who treat TMD have had continuing education in evaluating, treating
and managing conditions of the head and neck.
What will your TMD treatment
involve?
Our therapsits at OSI perform a thorough evaluation
to identify the sources of the problems and work with patients to devise an
approrpiate treatment plan for their conditin. Therapy may include any of the
following treatments: manual therapy, posural education, behavior management,
exercise and/or modalities. The physical therapists will work with patients to
improve awareness of posture and behavior habits in order to help restore the
correct resting position of their jaw. The physical therapist also works closely
with the referring physician to help coordinate care an dprovide the most
effective care.
What results can you expect from your TMD
treatment?
Physical therapy is highly effective at
conservatively managing TMD conditions. In most cases therapy will help decrease
pain and improve functional abilities. Patients will be given instructions for
welf management including behavior modification, postural awareness, exercises
and other self management tools necessary to help at home. The typical number of
physical therapy visits for TMD is 6-12 visits. The therapist will provide a
more specific number of visits after an evaluation has been
completed.
